While making this needle felted dog, I mainly struggled with the accuracy of details. Since I had a specific reference that I wanted to recreate, if the features of my dog were slightly different, the whole feeling would also change. This created a unique challenge different from if I had followed a design of my own. I had to constantly refer back to the reference picture for the body shape, foot shape, and the features of the face at the end. Strictly speaking, I think the body of the dog didn’t turn out long or large enough, the feet are a bit too big and far apart, and the features don’t really give off the same feeling as the image. In this case, I could’ve made the facial features smaller, but the size that I worked with was already difficult to stab into using the needle. I think this is one of the difficulties with needle felting that if you reduce your details down to very few fibers, they might not catch onto the needle when you try to stab them in. I figured out that taking pieces larger than I needed and stabbing the parts I wanted to hide allowed me to make details that were still small enough and workable. I also struggled to replicate the shape of the snout and nose, but I found that alternating layers of black and white allowed me to cover up mistakes or parts where I added too much of a color. This allowed me to achieve a pretty satisfactory shape for the black nose by making a large black area and covering up the edges with white to adjust for detail. Next time, I will probably choose to make the overall piece larger, especially if there are small details. I will also shape the body parts more carefully and combine smaller pieces of wool at a time.
